After struggling to figure out what I needed to do with my car, I could tell that there were some things that needed to be fixed as soon as possible. For starters, the car just wasn't running well, and I was really frustrated about what it meant for my family. I began working with a mechanic to sort things out, and within hours we had a better idea of what the problem was. We began using a little bit of money each time we got paid to manage the car, and within months, we had a better car that we knew would start when we turned the key. Are you shopping around for new headlights because the ones on your vehicle are dimmer than they should be? Replacing dim headlights is important because not being able to see the road clearly puts you at risk of causing an accident when driving your vehicle at night. However, do not jump into buying new headlights until you are sure the lights are going out. Did you know that the battery in your vehicle could be responsible for causing the headlights to be dimmer than usual? To determine if the battery is the culprit of the problem, look for other signs that point to the battery needing attention.
1. Starting Your Vehicle Is More Difficult
Having trouble starting your vehicle is one of the possible signs that the battery is failing. However, there are several other issues that can cause starting problems as well. If your vehicle starts but you have to do something extra like press the gas pedal with your foot first, the battery might be the culprit. Another sign to look for is slower cranking of your vehicle than usual, as the battery might not be strong enough for the task. Other than your headlights being dimmer than usual, you might also notice that other electrical components in the vehicle are malfunctioning.
2. The Engine Does Not Fully Function
Are you confused because your engine turns on when you start your vehicle, but it quickly dies? If your engine is unable to fully crank up, it might be because the battery has a low charge. The constant need to get your vehicle jumped by another vehicle is a sign that the battery cannot sustain a charge for a long time. In such a case, you are better off getting a new battery installed in your vehicle before the battery you have stops working altogether. Even if your check engine light is on, it could point to the battery needing attention.
3. There Are Signs of Battery Terminal Corrosion
If your car battery is corroded, it might be time to contact a professional to perform maintenance. This does not necessarily mean a new battery is needed. For example, if you look at the terminals on the battery and see corrosion on the metal, it is a sign that cleaning is needed. Battery corrosion usually appears in the form of a powdery substance that has a blue color. When a car battery is leaking acid, it is the common cause of terminal corrosion.
